Some 2,400 patients at the Portland Providence and Legacy Health hospital facilities were exposed to an "infection control breach" between December 2023 and June 2024. As reported in KGW News, a third-party anesthesiologist may have exposed this group to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV.
The exposure came from an anesthesiologist working through the Oregon Anesthesiology Group. They were appointed to Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center in December 2023, and they served for six months before receiving suspension. Legacy responded by launching an investigation into the exposure.
According to Providence, their internal investigation revealed that patients were put "at a low risk of exposure" for a variety of infectious diseases, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which can lead to AIDS. The company encouraged patients to get a blood test, stating that they would follow up with any positive cases.
How did the Legacy and Providence infection exposure happen?
An anesthesiologist with Oregon Anesthesiology Group physician routinely violated infection control practices during intravenous anesthesia. This breach of protocol exposed patients to risk of infection.
The physician worked for Oregon Anesthesiology Group and the two Providence facilities between 2017 and 2023, also spent six months at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center in Gresham, from December 2023 to June 2024.
At the time of this writing (July 2024), neither OHA nor the hospitals (Legacy and Providence) have received any reports of illness associated with this control breach. The Oregon Anesthesiology Group has terminated the physician, who has not been named.
